Meet Stephanie Peterson

What do I love as much as chickens? Farm life and opening up that experience to others – which we do through farm-style events and hosting guests in our farm stay Airbnb and through the HipCamp platform. In my role as a local producer, I am an expert in chicken keeping and all things related to the processing and selling of eggs. In addition to teaching backyard chicken keeping classes throughout the region, I have advocated for local food systems and sustainable agriculture through my work with a variety of local and national organizations. There are many ways to get closer to your food and nature. Let us help you do just that – whether through egg purchases, learning to keep your own chickens or joining us for a magical farm visit!

Our Story
I grew up in South Dakota and came of age on my grandparent’s cattle ranch in Perkins County. It was a magical time of exploration, horseback riding and memories made around Grandma Wini’s kitchen table. In contrast, as an adult I lived in Washington, DC for 20+ years and worked on Capitol Hill for Senator Tom Daschle for 10 of those years. Returning home to a small farm in SD in 2014 was fulfilling, and I did so with a greater understanding of our nation’s food and farming systems. At the same time, millions of Americans were becoming more aware of where their food comes from and also wanted to get closer to nature. I didn’t hesitate and began to make that dream a reality for myself and others.
After years of backyard chickens, gardening and raising and homeschooling children, I began my education on how to be a farmer. That meant reaching out to community and collaborating with a diverse group of folx. I dove into non-profit work, grassroots organizing and food and farming advocacy. I served on boards and committees for organizations such as Dakota Rural Action, the National Family Farm Coalition, the Sioux Falls Food Council, Sioux Falls Thrive Food Security Action Team, the City of Sioux Falls Sustainability Committee, and the Sioux Falls Urban Agriculture Coalition. And when I wasn’t collecting eggs or participating in a Zoom board meeting, I hosted numerous fundraising events on the farm, opening up this little slice of heaven for others to enjoy.
